Genesis Chapter 13

Genesis 13

This chapter is about Abram and Lot’s relationship. Also, God reaffirms his promise to Abram. The life of Abram is a good example for us in how to grow in our faith.

Verses 1-13

Abram, Lot and Sarai returned to Bethel after leaving Egypt in chapter 12.

Abram leaves Egypt and comes back between Bethel which means House of God and Ai which means “ruin” where he had worshipped God before and called on the name of the Lord.

The word call in verse 4 means to call out for help.

Abram is described as being rich with an abundance of livestock. Lot also had sizable herds.

There wasn’t enough pastureland for all their animals and there was strife and they agreed to split up.

Abram let Lot choose his choice of land.

Lot went east near the city of Sodom because it looked ideal for his livestock.

Sodom was described as “wicked, great sinners before the Lord.”

I Corinthians 15:33 Do not be deceived: “Bad company ruins good morals.”

Lot put his soul and the souls of his family in danger for the sake of prosperity.

Abram settled to the west in Canaan.

Verses 14-18

God told Abram He would give his children all the land he could see to the north, south, east and west.

He also promised to make Abrams descendants multiply as numerous as the dust of the earth.

Abram moved to Hebron and built an altar to the Lord.

Lot put his soul and the souls of his family in danger for the sake of prosperity.

Both Abram and Lot are believers but unlike Abram, Lot never makes worship a priority.

Time spent with God strengthens us spiritually.
